Inktober 2019 Reflections

This year was a success. For those of you that don’t know what Inktober is, it is a daily ink illustration challenge set forth by Jake Parker. Every day is a different prompt and you create from it. This year I decided I would have a theme. Last year, Jake created “The Intergalactic Travelers.” He created a whole page layout of characters. I have seen other instagramers do it as well. Chihiro Howe, a popular copic marker instagramer, created different witches this year. I decided I wanted to try my hand at character development. I follow many people that have their own original characters so I went this route.

At the end of September, I set out to plan my October. I was traveling to Portland, Oregon by plane and figured I would have some time to sit and think. It was at this time I created Binny. The bunny with tin ears. And this month would be about her adventures out and about. Throughout the month, I placed her in different scenarios, some with and some without backgrounds. It was fun creating different outfits for her. I played around with lighting toward the end. I even created what her parents look like. I think some of their design was inspired by some Hallmark Bear family Ornaments I have at home. I really enjoyed the whole process. Also, as a side note, I sketched a few of the images in advance and inked on the day of.

A little bit about her background, she has tin ears because she couldn’t hear when she was born, so they put tin ears in to amplify the sounds (like hearing aids but it was primative back then which is why they aren’t quite shaped like rabbit ears.) I haven’t really built up much of her story yet but I have plans for her in the future for sure.

For now I’m creating a dedicated space for her on Instagram if you want to keep up on what’s going on with Binny 😊
